Week 5 Game Preview: Texas Longhorns v. oklahoma sooners

Well, it won’t be an undefeated season after all. It’s easy to admit now – along with many others – that UCLA seemed like a pushover. They were mid-level PAC-10 team (if that) with few expectations, and there was no way they were going to roll in to Mack Brown’s house and put a beat down on the #6 Longhorns. Boy were we wrong – 34-12 wasn’t even a summary of what went wrong.

There are a lot of things that need to be fixed. Go ahead and start up the “replace Greg Davis” talk for the 2010 season, because once again, this writer is on board. Texas looked absolutely anemic in Saturday’s contest against the Bruins. After holding the opposition to -6 yards in the first quarter, Texas gave up 264 rushing yards in the final three quarters. The Bruins only passed for 27 yards all game – yep, 27 yards. But, this game was decided not necessarily on the defense’s performance, but the offense and special teams being anything but. Turnovers changed the game. Perhaps the incomplete TD pass to James Kirkendoll changes the attitude on the sidelines and the game ends up differently for the ‘Horns. But, it didn’t happen and the outcome wasn’t affected. Texas got beat, pure and simple, and truth be told they should have gotten beaten a lot worse then they did. This was the wake-up call. Were they looking ahead? We’re going to find out this week.

It’s a weekend of intense hatred on either side of the Red River. In fact, EyesOfTX’s significant other made an astute football observation this week while watching “The Biggest Loser.” One of the contestants, picked from Oklahoma City during a nationwide search for contestants, had family members in the crowd cheering her on in a contest to get on the show. Those family members were wearing ou t-shirts. Rather bluntly, the words, “I hope she loses” simultaneously echoed off the walls of our living room. While she thought I had somehow gotten in to the crazy pills, we all know who the sane one was that evening. ou sucks – let’s get to it, and if you need a refresher on your pre-game checklist for Texas/ou weekend, check it out here.

Texas Longhorns v. oklahoma sooners
2:30 p.m. CT (ABC)

Prediction:
Texas 17, oklahoma 42

It’s a first. EyesOfTX is picking against the ‘Horns. Saturday’s contest seems an insurmountable hill to climb, and with only a few cylinders in the Longhorns clunker working leading in to week 5, the road to glory in Dallas will be a long one in 2010.

On the plus side, this is THE game of the year on Texas’ schedule. Every player comes to Texas to relish in the atmosphere of Texas/ou weekend. To walk out the tunnel on to the field at the Cotton Bowl, amongst the 50/50 split of Longhorn and sooner fans and make their mark on the rivalry. This is the game that matters. This is for bragging rights. This is to gain back some of the respect lost after last Saturday’s debacle. If you need help getting amped up for this game, you shouldn’t set foot on the field.

Nonetheless, oklahoma WR Jaz Reynolds gave the Longhorns some bulletin board material this week. For those who don’t know, a lone gunman strode through the UT campus earlier this week, firing shots at random before entering the PCL library and taking his own life. Luckily, no bystanders were injured. But, that didn’t stop Reynolds from using Twitter to speak his mind: “Hey everyone in Austin, tx…….kill yourself #evillaugh.” Shortly thereafter, he followed up with: “Everyone in austin, tx disregard that last tweet….y’all will mess around n do it lmao.”

Thus, the dominoes will fall as they may on Saturday, and sooners will still be classy in every way we know them to be. And, Reynolds will enjoy the game from the sidelines – head coach Bob Stoops did one thing right and suspended him indefinitely. Too bad, surely the ‘Horns would have loved to have their shot at him this weekend. Metaphorically, of course.

oklahoma’s Keys To The Game:
It’s as though Stoops’ offense hasn’t changed in years. Balance. Lots of points. Select playmakers. Quentin Griffin comes to mind. As does Adrian Peterson. And Sam Bradford. And the other Roy Williams. And a number of others. Today’s sooners heros are none other than RB Demarco Murray and WR Ryan Broyles. It will be a two-man show on Saturday, with QB Landry Jones behind the scenes pulling the curtains back. Balance.

oklahoma sooners RB Demarco Murray

Murray is finally hitting is stride as the RB every fan has been waiting for him to become. He’s Peterson-sized at 6’1” and 207 pounds, and has gained 436 yards and seven TDs in just four games. He’s fast, and great in between the tackles or hitting the edge and making the most of open space. He’ll do the leg work for the sooners on Saturday, but the question becomes where and how he makes his yards – on the ground or through the air. Broyles is a known quantity, and has shown up big for the sooners in previous Red River Rivalry games. Despite his size (5’11” 193 pounds), he has a way of freeing himself up in coverage and making big plays to the tune of 120 yards per game and four TDs. He’ll be Jones’ go-to wide out on Saturday, and expect Texas to plant CB Aaron Williams on his hip as the shut-down corner.

Jones is an accurate and strong-armed passer, but he’s relatively immobile and that should be something Texas keys on in their defensive scheme. He likes to get rid of the ball quickly, letting his aforementioned playmakers do the work, but if the Texas d-line can get pressure, he’s mistake prone. The sooners’ offensive line is also still struggling to gel, and although they put together gutty performances, they are just as susceptible to mistakes as the young Texas offensive line. They give up two sacks per game, and most of ou’s running game – stretch plays or running off-tackle – veer away from what is usually the strength of an offensive line’s blocking schemes.

oklahoma sooners LB Travis Lewis

The defensive line and linebackers will cause Texas problems, especially from the edge. ou returns two defensive ends – Jeremy Beal and Frank Alexander – that could both make a case for national awards at season’s end. Beal is the real threat, but left one-on-one, Alexander will make plays as well. The defensive line will try to control the line of scrimmage and clear the dust so their star linebacker, Travis Lewis, can clean up everything in site and is also solid in coverage. With Texas’ anemic running game, expect to see Lewis blitzing more often to force Texas QB Garrett Gilbert to make poor decisions – something he hasn’t really done all year. With the middle of the field open, Texas should be able to exploit the short-yardage passing attack.

But, the defensive backfield poses the biggest threat for ou and opportunity for Texas. The corners are small, 5’9” and 5’11”, and shouldn’t be able to handle Texas’ height on the outside. Their safeties are plenty capable of running the sooners’ cover two scheme, and Gilbert will have to disguise his reads in a way that would make former Texas QB Chris Simms jealous to be successful.

Texas’ Keys To The Game:
First, show up to play. The ‘Horns looked lethargic last week, and they need the playmakers to step up at every position on Saturday. Every player at every position was tested this week in practice. Every player’s starting job was on the line. Every player’s ears should be ringing from a position coach in their head about blocking their gaps, running the right routes, holding on to the ball, and not making mental mistakes. Rumor has it, that as of Wednesday, the Texas coaching staff hadn’t figured out their offensive game plan for ou – something that is usually settled on Sunday afternoon in Austin. That’s a scary proposition that most Texas fans don’t want to hear.

Second, Texas need to expand the offensive playbook. Texas is awfully predictable right now, and while Gilbert is making safe reads to his check-downs, it’s happening too often. The bubble screen and hot routes aren’t successful in moving the chains with this group of wideouts. Yet, on the rare occasion we see Gilbert get out of the pocket or looking downfield, we have success – in big chunks. While Gilbert can get the ball to his playmakers on the outside, they’ve got to step up and make plays as well. Against a questionable sooners secondary, this will be their time to shine. Run sharp routes, catch the ball (it’s one of two jobs you have on the field!), and make some yards after the catch. The running game, with likely its fourth different starter in five games, shouldn’t be a factor this week – all they need to do is pass protect, and act as Gilbert’s relief valve when the sooners’ pass rush is overwhelming the offensive line.

Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis

As an EyesOfTX subscriber brought to my attention this week, it’s not necessarily the offensive players at fault for the production on the field – offensive coordinator Greg Davis has managed to diminish NFL-caliber talent on the offensive side of the ball for years. Think back to 2007, when the team wasn’t that good, and our offense consisted of next-level talent at every skill position: QB Colt McCoy, WRs Quan Cosby and Jordan Shipley, TE Jermichael Finley, and RB Jamaal Charles. Yikes – if he couldn’t do anything with those guys, what’s in store for what looks like mediocre talent in 2010? That makes you wonder if and how Greg Davis is hampering the talent walking through the doors of Moncrief every year.

Third, Texas has to re-group on defense. This week and next (against Nebraska), the ‘Horns are going to continue to see a top-tier running attack. UCLA was nothing, and they gashed defensive coordinator Will Muschamp’s schemes for three quarters last weekend. The middle of the line was atrocious, and the linebackers were no where to be found – they might as well have been in Driftwood, Texas, eating Salt Lick BBQ. At least we’d applaud that effort. The secondary is going to have to step up and blanket Broyles this week, while also keeping a keen eye on Murray out of the backfield – all while making sure open field tackles. Let the defensive line do their jobs by putting pressure on Jones and leaving the clean-up to the safeties playing field generals.

Finally, enough with the mediocrity – hell, downright gnarly – special teams effort. Dropped punts, forgetting fundamentals, kick-offs misplayed. Last weekend was a lesson to high school coaches everywhere is what NOT to do on special teams. Get it fixed, and Texas has an advantage in the kicking game in Dallas.

This one could go one of two ways, ‘Horns fans. It could be a defensive battle, perhaps utilizing the kicking game to win it, or an outright embarrassment that doesn’t feature Texas on the 4-1 side of things. This is the game to turn it around. This is the game to show the world why Texas deserves to be in the top 25. This is the game that sets the precedent for the rest of the season.

It’s 3:45 a.m. and ou still sucks!

Bradford, McCoy Top QB Scores On NFL’s Wonderlic Test

As opposed to the Vince Young debacle of four years ago, when the national championship-winning quarterback scored a 6 on his first attempt at the Wonderlic test, Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had a “respectable” showing in his NFL Combine Wonderlic test scores this week according to the Austin American-Statesman.

The test, composed of 50-questions and administered in 12 minutes, assesses a player’s overall aptitude, and is especially important for quarterbacks, offensive lineman, and linebackers who must make quick decisions.

McCoy had the second-best score of this year’s quarterback class with a 25, but the leading score was from oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford who scored a 36. Other quarterbacks in this year’s NFL draft class, including Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen (23) and Florida’s Tim Tebow (22) scored lower. The average player scores, on average, a 20 on the exam.

Will this increase McCoy’s draft status over the paparazzi-status of Clausen or Tebow? Could Bradford’s score elevate him to the top of the draft? It remains to be seen, but Young’s final Wonderlic score of 15 didn’t affect him being taken as the 3rd player in that draft to the Tennessee Titans (and becoming a two-time Pro Bowl selection in his first four years in the league).

Thoughts? How much impact does a player’s Wonderlic test score have on the player’s success in the NFL?

2009 College Football Award Results

2009 Heisman Trophy
In the closest balloting ever in the history of the Heisman Trophy, yet another sophomore was named to the lifelong fraternity of football elites earlier this month in New York City.

Following in the footsteps of Florida QB Tim Tebow and oklahoma QB Sam Bradford when they were sophomores, the 2009 award was presented to Alabama RB Mark Ingram, but he won only by the slimmest margins (28 votes), over surprise second place vote-getter Stanford RB Toby Gerhart. Texas Longhorn QB Colt McCoy finished third in the balloting, ahead of Tebow – who made his third trip to NYC as a finalist for the award – and Nebraska DT Ndamkong Suh. While McCoy finished third overall, he didn’t take the Heisman voter’s Southwest region, which went to Suh, and even failed to win over his hometown sports reporters (the Austin American-Statesman, whom has four Heisman voters, had only one pick McCoy as their 2009 winner – there reasoning here). Here’s hoping Ingram will one day help quiet annoying former oklahoma sooners RB Billy Sims, who continues to embarrass the trophy’s name with his awards show antics of yelling or promoting “Boomer! Sooner!” during the live broadcast.

In the end, Texas fans fear not. Recent memory proves that Texas football – including players who have been runners-up for the Heisman Trophy – have extremely good luck in the bowl games against Heisman winners. Especially when the national championship is on the line. Webster defines that: “See also: 2005.”

Other notable Big 12 Conference Award Recognition
Texas Longhorns QB Colt McCoy
Maxwell Award – Honors the nation’s best all-around player.
Walter Camp Football Foundation’s Player of the Year Award – Honors the nation’s player of the year; this is the second consecutive year McCoy has won the award.
Davey O’Brien Award – Honors the nation’s best quarterback.

Nebraska Cornhuskers DT Ndamkong Suh
Chuck Bednarik Award – Honors the nation’s best defensive player.
Outland Trophy – Honors the nation’s best interior lineman.
Lombardi Award – Honors the nation’s top lineman.
Bronko Nagurski Trophy – Honors the nation’s top defensive player.

While several other Texas-state (TCU DE Jerry Hughes) and Texas Longhorn players (WR Jordan Shipley and DB Earl Thomas) were finalists for the aforementioned and other national awards, including the Jim Thorpe Award honoring the nation’s best defensive back and the Biletnikoff Award honoring the nation’s best wide receiver, Tennessee DB Eric Berry and Notre Dame’s Golden Tate won those awards respectively.

Quick Big 12 Conference Football Updates

A few key bits of Big 12 Conference football news to share this Thursday evening, from the campuses of oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State.

ou QB Sam Bradford Undergoes Successful Shoulder Surgery
After injuring his shoulder for a second time this season against Texas in the Red River Rivalry, quarterback Sam Bradford elected to have surgery on his right, throwing shoulder on Tuesday by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama. After the 35-minute surgery, Andrews said, “It went as expected.” Bradford should spend 4-6 months recovering, and be ready to enter the NFL Draft in April.

Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant Ruled Ineligible For 2009
After lying to the NCAA about his meeting with former NFL player Deion Sanders and being suspended for the last four games, the rules committee ruled on Tuesday to suspend Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant for one year. Although Bryant would be eligible to play again midway through next season in Stillwater, many believe he will give up his remaining college eligibility to play in the NFL, where Bryant is expected to be a top 10 choice in April’s draft.

Texas Tech To Start Redshirt Frosh QB?
For the first time in Mike Leach’s tenure at Texas Tech, the head coach will likely switch his starting quarterback for this this week’s game against Kansas without an injury to a player impacting his decision. Leach has said he feels former starting QB Taylor Potts has “confidence issues” and with second-string QB Stephen Sheffield out with an injury, he might defer to redshirt freshman QB Seth Doege to start against the Jayhawks this weekend. Doege played in Saturday’s home loss to Texas A&M, where he accounted for 146 yards passing on 18-for-25 attempts.

Best of…Big 12 Football Videos 2009-2010

As we work our way through the 2009-2010 college football season, Eyes Of TX has selected some video clips of the best or most game- or season-changing Big 12 moments so far this year.

Texas Longhorns Pre-Game Entrance
The Longhorns – and Athletic Director Deloss Dodds – have been putting boatloads of money in the ‘Horns Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium over the past 5 years. In addition to the new field turf and the North End Zone additions, the biggest attraction – literally – has been the Godzillatron. This video highlights the Longhorns entrance – via pre-game video theatrics – to the stadium on game day. Chills anyone?

Iowa State Cyclones Locker Room Post-Game v. #15 Nebraska Cornhuskers
What a sweet victory for Paul Rhoads and his Cyclones. In a huge victory in Lincoln by the score of 9-7, Iowa State showcased defense and the willingness to play a tough four quarters of football in a hostile environment. If you watched the broadcast of the game, you saw Rhoads going nuts with the ISU fans after the game, and then there was this. Eyes Of TX likes Rhoads because is emotional and has a passion for his players and the game. With more victories like this one, the Cyclones are sure to climb out of the cellar of the Big 12’s North division. Congrats to Cyclones.

Nebraska Cornhuskers’ Comeback v. Missouri Tigers
In a near monsoon in Columbia, Missouri, the Nebraska Cornhuskers fought off an early charge from the Tigers to win going-away in the fourth quarter. This game – absolutely dominated by Nebraska’s stud defensive tackle N. Suh – was an absolute mess, but the Huskers found a way to win it in the end.

ou QB Sam Bradford Injured Against BYU & Texas
Coming off a Heisman Trophy season in 2008, this definitely wasn’t what sooner fans, or Sam Bradford, had in mind. To end the first half of the BYU game – which ended up as an early season loss – Bradford was leveled twice on the same drive, with the second hit spraining the AC joint in his right, throwing arm. After several weeks recovery, Bradford returned for the Red River Rivalry game against Texas, only to be injured again (the same shoulder) in the team’s second offensive series. Now, Bradford’s elected surgery, and will be out the rest of the season.

Texas Longhorns Sergio Kindle’s Sack on Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts
Texas defensive end replacement for NFL-bound Brian Orakpo is none other than Sergio Kindle. On this night in September, Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts met Kindle in the backfield, and it was no wonder who won the battle. Potts was sacked, his helmet jarred loose, and he trekked off the field with what would later be determined to be a concussion. One of the bigger hits on an opposing QB this year for the Longhorns, and the beginning of “The Goon Squad,” from which the Texas defense has injured three other opposing QBs since.

What else is missing? Got a great video from a great moment in the 2009-2010 football season? Let EyesOfTX know!

ou QB Bradford Announces Season-Ending Surgery

Oklahoma Sooners

After more than a week of debating his options, and many sources citing ou QB Sam Bradford was leaning toward season-ending surgery, he announced today that he will undergo the knife to repair his right, throwing shoulder. The surgery will be performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama. His expected recovery time is 4-6 months, and should allow Bradford time to prepare for the NFL Draft next spring.

ou’s Bradford Done For Season?

After taking another big hit to his throwing shoulder in the loss to Texas last weekend, it sounds like injured oklahoma sooners quarterback – and last year’s Heisman Trophy winner – Sam Bradford could be done for the year.

Bradford is expected to consult some additional medical sources to evaluate his options, but sources believe he will elect to undergo surgery to repair the sprained AC joint in his right shoulder. The surgery, if he pursues it, will help him recover and then prepare for April’s NFL Draft and his long-term career opportunities.

Maybe now Texas QB Colt McCoy has a chance to win the head-to-head “bro”mance competition with Bradford – EyesOfTX wouldn’t mind some Longhorn victories in ping pong, H-O-R-S-E, golf shot accuracy, and a wiffle ball home run derby. Although, this would mean ESPN would give Texas a bit of on-air love. One can dream, right?

Game Preview: Texas Longhorns v. oklahoma sooners

Red_River_Rivalry_Logo

Saturday, October 17
11:00a Central
ABC

It’s here. The Red River Rivalry. It’s Texas/o-Who? weekend at the Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas, and “Big Tex” will groan from his pedestal that this year’s contest will once again pit two highly-competitive Big 12 football teams on the gridiron. It’s sure to be another doozy in Dallas.

There is the potential to ramble on for weeks (and 364 bragging days after) about this game, but no matter what words fill this space, the blood and guts spilled at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday will be worth all the glory to the winner.

Although o-Who? has lost two non-conference games already this season, they remain in the hunt for the Big 12 South title if they can win on Saturday – what would amount to a key win in an otherwise somber beginning to the season. Texas, on the other hand, marks this as a “must-win” on the calendar, as the ‘Horns are chasing redemption for last year’s duping in both the Big 12 and the BCS championships. o-Who? quarterback Sam Bradford has returned from his shoulder injury, and Texas fans are still waiting to see the 2008 Colt McCoy show up at quarterback for the Longhorns. Despite those storylines, this game shapes up to be a defensive battle – two high-profile offenses against two stout defenses, as both teams rank in the top 10 nationally in defense, Texas at #4 and o-Who? at #9. While the running game remains lost for the ‘Horns, o-Who? brings two legit running backs to table – and, the team who rules the running game usually wins this game, despite the aerial assault by both squads.

Eyes Of TX will defer to the inundation of Red River Rivalry coverage in the media this week to help tell the story this week.

To be clear, Eyes Of TX has absolutely no love for the crimson and cream, “BCS Bob” Stoops, “boomer sooner,” pop guns, land thieves, Ruf/Neks, or schooners. It’s game day, and it’s safe to say: “It’s 2:21a PT, and o-Who? still sucks.”

Let’s make it four out of the last five, ‘Horns!

NCAA Football: Week 7 Viewing Guide

NCAA FootballIt’s time. The biggest game of the season is upon Texas Longhorn and oklahoma sooner fans, but don’t blow your tops too soon because there’s a lot to look forward to this weekend across the college football agenda. Find some Shiner Bock, kick back, and enjoy the ride because the slate of games this weekend doesn’t get much better than this. Here’s your week 7 viewing guide.

Thursday
7:30 PM ET
#8 Cincinnati at #21 South Florida, ESPN
This is a meeting of the best in the Big East. That sounds like a joke, honestly. Both teams are unbeaten and 1-0 in conference play and have never before played with both teams ranked in the top 25. This game should decide the BCS representative from the conference.

Friday
9:00 PM ET
Bed time, er, Pittsburgh v. Rutgers
It’s going to be a long day for Big 12 fans on Saturday, so get your beauty sleep. Oh, Pitt is playing Rutgers. Choose sleep.

Saturday
12:00 PM ET
#3 Texas vs. #20 oklahoma, ABC
Game of the week for the nation, game of the year for Longhorns. oklahoma QB Sam Bradford looked like his old self in his first game back from the injury to his throwing shoulder last weekend, so this won’t be the cakewalk that ou’s losses to BYU and Miami might lead you to believe. Both defenses are ranked in the top 10 nationally and the Texas offense has been sluggish at times, most notably their two offensive touchdown effort last week against an inferior Colorado team. Hopefully, the ‘Horns shake off the rust for good and take this one to Big Game Bob and the land thieves north of the border.

3:30 PM ET
#6 USC at #25 Notre Dame, NBC
Follow up the fireworks in Dallas with another huge rivalry game that has massive implications for both teams, as this game is essentially do-or-die for both teams. The Trojans are going on the road to South Bend and desperately need to leave with a victory in order to keep their BCS dreams alive. For the Irish to have any chance of climbing back into the BCS picture, they need this upset on their resume.

6:00 PM ET
#4 Virginia Tech at #19 Georgia Tech, ESPN2
The Techs square off! Virginia Tech’s only loss to-date was in week 1 to then-#5 Alabama. Since then, the Hokies have been on a roll. However, they return to Atlanta (the site of their opening week loss) this weekend to face the Yellowjackets who could lock up a three-way tie in the ACC’s Coastal division between themselves, Virginia Tech, and Miami if they come away with the win. Either way, something tells me the ACC has a more logical tiebreaker than the Big 12. Eyes Of TX predicts a Tech win, and the Vegas odds will good on that.

8:00 PM ET
#22 South Carolina at #2 Alabama, ESPN
Alabama isn’t playing like the #2 team in the country right now; they’re playing like the #1 team. South Carolina will have their hands full going on the road to Tuscaloosa for this one. Fortunately for Spurrier’s Gamecocks, his defense is ranked #15 in the nation. Unfortunately for them, Alabama’s defense is #2.

9:15 PM ET
#16 oklahoma State at Missouri, ESPN2
Close out the night with another Big 12 matchup. Missouri fell from the top 25 this week after their loss to Nebraska at home, and Okie State has stagnantly remained in the teens since their inexplicable loss to Houston, but sit comfortably at 1-0 in conference play. The Tigers still have a decent shot at competing for the Big 12 North title with both Kansas and Nebraska, but those teams also face precarious games against Texas and Oklahoma respectively in the coming weeks. The Tigers need to take this one in Columbia to keep those hopes alive. The Pokes are going to have a run for their money, especially if star WR Dez Bryant remains ineligible to play.

Thanks to LilPete for his ongoing contributions to the weekly viewing guide for Eyes Of TX.

NCAA Football: Week 6 Viewing Guide

NCAA FootballAre we really already halfway through the season? It’s week six in the college football season, and this is when things get interesting as conference play is in full effect and the national rankings have begun to sort themselves out. Of course, “now things get interesting” only relates if you’re not a Big 12 Conference fan.

There are a great set of games to check in on this weekend, so here’s your week six NCAA football viewing guide.

Thursday
#21 Nebraska 27 at #24 Missouri 12
If you missed this game on Thursday night, here’s a quick recap – a near-tsunami came through Columbia, Missouri, on Thursday night and it wasn’t either team’s offense for the first three quarters. Special teams mistakes and the punting game were the outcomes of heavy rain, but in the fourth quarter, Nebraska found some magic and scored three TDs in just over 3 minutes to seal the victory. As Eyes Of TX expected, this puts Nebraska and Kansas in the driver’s seat for the Big 12 North title. If you haven’t been watching Nebraska, you should begin thinking about defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh as a Heisman Trophy candidate – he is unbelievable.

Saturday
12:00 PM ET
#17 Auburn at Arkansas, ESPN
Auburn has entered the top 25 with a 5-0 record. Arkansas isn’t likely to stand in their way to a rise up the rankings, but Ryan Mallett – whether he sticks with football or pursues a Major League Baseball career – has the potential to keep the ‘Hogs close. This is a nice way to kick off a great afternoon and see what’s going on in the SEC.

3:30 PM ET
#3 Alabama at #20 Mississippi, CBS
Alabama has been gaining ground on Texas in the polls and Ole Miss was positioned in the top 5 only a few short weeks ago before being exposed at South Carolina. The Rebels could redeem themselves with a victory at home, or the Tide could make a case for themselves as the best team in the country. Either way, this is must watch.

Wisconsin at #9 Ohio State, ABC/ESPN
ABC has a quad-fecta of regional games Saturday afternoon so check your listings for what’s available to you. Wisconsin enters this game unbeaten and unranked, sitting at the top of the Big 10 standings – yet they are still unranked. That is hard to fathom given Washington was ranked earlier this season, but we digress. Tyrelle Pryor has the potential to use his legs to win this one for State, then again, everyone has been saying Pryor can run and Eyes Of TX has yet to see it on display. Maybe Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis needs to come to town and breathe some life in to the Ohio State offense. It will be interesting to see what both of these teams are made of this week.

#13 Oregon at UCLA, ABC
Oregon still has a lot to prove after their opening week loss to now #6 Boise State, but could make a case for themselves as the best team in the Pac-10. They’ve looked solid the past few weeks, including a beat-down of then-#6 California, and their quarterback could be back from this match-up. Neuheisal’s already got bets on the outcome of this game, from what we hear.

Baylor at #19 oklahoma, ABC
ou is floundering, and Baylor has never beaten the sooners, but there’s no time like the present. After the close loss to Miami last week, the sooners desperately need a win in their final lead up to the Red River Shootout, but Baylor hasn’t had a team as likely to pull off an upset of a top 25 team in a long time. Unfortunately, that Baylor team had a healthy Robert Griffin, and he’s out for the season. ou quarterback Sam Bradford is expected to start his first game since the week one injury, so we’ll see how his recovery has gone over the course of the game.

UConn at Pittsburgh, ABC/ESPN
This game rounds out the four top for ABC and doesn’t add much to the conversation, but the game is on TV whether you like it or not, so you might as well be aware. If anything, it’s a good opportunity to get a chuckle at Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt’s moustache.

7:15 PM ET
Colorado at #2 Texas, ESPN
Hopefully, Texas isn’t looking ahead to ou weekend in Dallas. The ‘Horns should be able to put this away early, as Colorado continues to struggle through a four quarter game. Coach Dan Hawkins club just can’t seem to get it together, and with the ‘Horns bye week and the offense hitting its stride against UTEP, this is another scary match-up for the ‘Buffs. On a positive note, if this game gets out of hand early, it allows us all to check out what’s happening in Baton Rouge.

8:00 PM ET
#1 Florida at #4 LSU, CBS
CBS has the game of the week with this top 5 showdown. The storylines for this game don’t need repeating here, this week is all about what takes place in Death Valley. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has been dealing with the lingering effects of a concussion he suffered against Kentucky, and his play tonight is a game-time decision. If Tebow sits this one out, Eyes Of TX believes there is a huge opportunity for an upset.
